Marsabit Municipality, in partnership with the SND Range Project and Mercy Corps, has stepped up preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains by rolling out a raft of measures, including ongoing drainage works.
The preparations come as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns of an established El Niño rains that is expected to strengthen into a very strong event towards the end of 2026.
SND Range Project Crisis Modifier Officer Bonaya Diid Malla said authorities were leaving nothing to chance, with emphasis on early warning and the protection of lives and property.
Malla said both his organization and the Marsabit Municipality were approaching the upcoming rainy season as both an opportunity and a risk, stressing the importance of early action in preventing loss of lives and reducing the impact of weather-related disasters on communities.
He urged residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations and take early measures, including clearing drainage channels around their homes and installing gutters.
“We cannot wait for the rains to come before we act. We must be proactive and address the challenges we know lie ahead,” he said.
