Residents and shop owners in Marsabit Town have commended the ongoing clearing of drainage channels and waterways by the Marsabit Municipality in partnership with the SND Range Project and Mercy Corps.
They described the exercise as a timely intervention that would help reduce flooding and improve sanitation within the community.
The ongoing operation involves removing debris, sand and other obstructions that impede the free flow of water along drainage corridors.
The Marsabit Municipality, SND Range Project and Mercy Corps are prioritising flood-prone areas as part of efforts to minimise the impact of anticipated heavy rains and protect residents and property.
The interventions are aimed at improving drainage channels, strengthening emergency preparedness and reducing the risk of flooding as the county prepares for the expected El Niño rains.
The 10-day exercise is intended to ensure the smooth flow of excess water and minimise potential damage.
SND Range Project Crisis Modifier Officer Mr Bonaya Diid Malla, who is overseeing the ongoing works, said the exercise would not only help manage stormwater runoff and enhance public safety, but also improve the lives of residents by preventing waterborne diseases and protecting property from damage.
The exercise forms part of efforts by the municipality and its partners, including the SND Range Project and Mercy Corps, to reduce the risk of flooding, improve environmental hygiene and promote healthier living conditions.
Malla appealed to residents to stop using drains and waterways as dumping grounds and urged communities to take greater responsibility for maintaining their immediate environment.
“I urge residents to regard environmental sanitation as a collective responsibility and to participate actively in keeping their surroundings clean,” he said.
Residents who spoke during the exercise said the initiative would help remove debris, sand and other blockages that hinder the free flow of water through drainage channels.
They said the exercise would improve the drainage system in the area, particularly as the rainy season approaches.
One of the residents, Qabale Guyo, said the exercise would go a long way towards addressing the perennial flooding experienced in the area.
“We are happy about what the municipality, SND Range Project and Mercy Corps are doing. This drainage has been blocked for some time, and it usually causes water to overflow whenever it rains,” she said.
Qabale urged residents to complement the efforts of the municipality and its partners by maintaining proper waste disposal practices and desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels.
She said collective responsibility was essential to achieving a cleaner and flood-free town.
She added that clearing drainage systems and waterways would help promote public health, environmental sustainability and the overall wellbeing of residents.
The initiative forms part of Governor Mohamud Ali’s administration’s efforts to improve environmental sanitation and prevent flooding in the area.
